Franchise Chatter (FC): Happy Joeās recently celebrated its 2026 Annual Conference by recognizing franchisees, operators, and community leaders from across the system. What did this yearās event reveal about the current momentum and long-term direction of the brand?
Tom Sacco (TS): This yearās conference reinforced something I believe more strongly than ever: Happy Joeās is building meaningful momentum because we are growing from a position of strength, not simply chasing growth. What stood out most was seeing success show up across every corner of the system. We recognized operators delivering exceptional sales growth, franchisees reinvesting in their restaurants, teams driving local innovation, and leaders making a measurable impact in their communities.
At the same time, we honored people who have spent decades building this brand. That combination says a lot. We are attracting new energy without losing what made Happy Joeās special in the first place. Our long-term direction is clear: invest in our people, modernize intentionally, expand strategically, and continue creating experiences families want to come back to for generations.
FC: One of the strongest themes throughout the conference was longevity, with multiple franchisees and team members celebrating decades with the brand. What do you believe has allowed Happy Joeās to maintain such strong multigenerational relationships over the years?

Happy Joeās was built around creating memories, and that philosophy extends far beyond our guests. It applies to our franchisees, operators, and team members, too. You do not stay connected to a brand for decades because of a transaction. You stay because you feel valued, supported, and part of something meaningful.
Many of our franchisees have raised families through this business. Team members started as teenagers and became owners, leaders, and lifelong ambassadors. That culture matters. We celebrate wins together, work through challenges together, and stay focused on helping each other succeed. In an industry that moves fast, I think people appreciate that Happy Joeās still feels personal.
FC: Franchisees were recognized for everything from sales growth and operational excellence to community outreach and creative local marketing. What qualities do your highest-performing operators tend to have in common?
TS: Our strongest operators understand that operational excellence and hospitality are not separate strategies; they are one and the same. Our top performers are deeply engaged in their businesses. They know their teams, their guests, and their communities. They operate with consistency while still creating excitement locally.
They also stay coachable. The best franchisees never act like they have it all figured out. They continue to evolve, invest, and look for opportunities to improve. Ultimately, the operators who āwinā over time are the ones who combine discipline with passion.

Why has local engagement remained such an important part of Happy Joeās franchise culture and business model?
TS: Happy Joeās has always believed we earn loyalty by showing up for people beyond the four walls of the restaurant. For generations, our restaurants have celebrated birthdays, hosted fundraisers, supported schools, and created gathering places within their communities. That local connection is not marketing; it is part of our DNA.
The operators who create the deepest community relationships consistently build stronger businesses because guests support brands that support them. Community involvement creates trust, emotional connection, and long-term loyalty that no promotion can replicate.
FC: Happy Joeās has more than 50 years of brand history and strong nostalgic connections with guests across the Midwest. How do you continue modernizing the brand while still protecting the family-friendly culture people know and love?
TS: You cannot preserve a legacy brand by freezing it in time. Our approach has been to modernize the experience while protecting the emotion our guests associate with Happy Joeās. Since 2020, we have refreshed restaurant design, upgraded technology, reimagined menu offerings, and improved operations while remaining committed to being a place where families create memories together.
When guests walk into Happy Joeās, we still want them to feel the joy, warmth, and celebration they remember. We are evolving how we deliver that experience, not changing why people loved us in the first place.
FC: Several restaurants across the system were recognized for strong sales performance, reinvestment, and guest engagement. What operational priorities are currently helping drive success across the Happy Joeās system?
TS: Right now, our biggest priorities are consistency, simplicity, and creating experiences worth returning for. We continue investing in operational tools, training, technology, and restaurant standards that make execution easier for franchisees and better for guests. At the same time, we remain focused on menu innovation and creating reasons for families to choose Happy Joeās more often. We also encourage operators to think beyond transactions and focus on hospitality, local engagement, and building emotional connections that drive repeat visits.
FC: Happy Joeās continues expanding into new markets while maintaining deep roots in hometown communities. What do you believe makes the franchise opportunity especially compelling for both existing operators and prospective franchisees today?
TS: We offer something increasingly difficult to find: a proven brand with strong emotional equity that still has a significant runway ahead. Franchisees are joining a business with more than 50 years of awareness and goodwill, but also one that has modernized operations, refreshed the guest experience, and reignited growth. Whether someone is an existing operator or entering franchising for the first time, they see a leadership team committed to partnership, innovation, and helping franchisees win in the long term.
FC: The annual conference placed a strong emphasis on relationships, loyalty, and people. How important is franchisee culture and systemwide collaboration to the long-term success of the Happy Joeās brand?
TS: Culture is not a soft metric; it is a business advantage. The strongest franchise systems create environments where operators share ideas, solve challenges together, and genuinely want to help one another succeed. That collaboration accelerates innovation and strengthens performance across the system. We work hard to create transparency, accessibility, and trust because when franchisees feel heard and supported, the entire brand moves faster and performs better.
FC: Looking ahead, where do you see the biggest opportunities for continued franchise growth and brand expansion over the next several years?
TS: We see opportunity on multiple fronts. Domestically, we continue expanding thoughtfully into new markets while strengthening existing ones. Recently, we announced development momentum across Iowa and Illinois, continued growth in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and upcoming expansion into North Dallas, TX, along with the MinneapolisāSt. Paul market. Internationally, we are accelerating growth plans in the Middle East.
We also continue to explore new formats and access points, including our food truck platform, which opens the brand to new audiences and occasions, as well as overnight delivery via the Goldbelly platform. Our goal is not simply more units; it is sustainable, strategic access points that strengthen the entire system.
FC: After reflecting on this yearās annual conference and award winners, what are you personally most proud of when it comes to the current state and future of the Happy Joeās brand?
TS: What Iām most proud of is that our guests, team members, and franchisees once again believe in our core values. When I joined Happy Joeās in 2020, the brand had experienced years of decline and uncertainty. Today, there is renewed confidence across franchisees, team members, and development partners. We have rebuilt momentum and become relevant again while honoring the legacy that made Happy Joeās special in the first place.
Seeing operators reinvest, seeing new franchisees join the system, and seeing longtime guests bring their own children and grandchildren into our restaurants reminds me that we are building something special, something that really matters. And I truly believe the best chapter of Happy Joe’s is still ahead.
