Section IV – Background Information on the College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving Franchise
18 Things You Need to Know About the College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving Franchise
Donates Two Million Meals
1. In late May 2021, College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving announced that it had donated two million meals to U.S. Hunger, a national nonprofit committed to forging a path towards a hunger-free world through highlighting hunger issues, providing meals to those in need, and solving the root causes of food insecurity. In addition to meal donations, College HUNKS uses its fleet of nationwide trucks to transport and deliver food supplies, tables, and equipment to many U.S. Hunger projects taking place nationwide.
2. Nick Friedman, co-founder and visionary of College HUNKS, said, “We genuinely care about our customers and the communities we serve, which is why community support is and will always be one of the core tenets of our brand. Every one of our franchise locations is committed to doing their part in assembling and packaging healthy meals that are distributed far and wide to children (as well as veterans and the elderly) who don’t know where or when their next meal is coming. We can change this; we are changing this!”
3. For every moving or junk removal service completed, College HUNKS works with U.S. Hunger to provide two nutritious meals. Since 2017, College HUNKS has provided a staggering two million meals to children in need – an especially momentous milestone on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in shutdowns and unemployment, amplifying food scarcity issues for many families across the country.
4. Rick Whitted, chief executive officer of U.S. Hunger, added, “With more than three years of providing meals for families in need, we are honored to celebrate yet another huge milestone with College HUNKS. Amid this pandemic, College HUNKS prioritized the desire to give back to our communities and help families in need get through some of their most challenging times. We are incredibly grateful for College HUNKS’ efforts, and we look forward to building a hunger-free world together.”
Endorsement Makes UCF Women’s Basketball the First Sponsored Women’s Roster
5. At the beginning of July 2021, not long after College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving became the first company to sponsor a college athlete, the company announced another historic move – sponsoring the entire University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Women’s Basketball Roster, the first deal of its kind. This comes after the NCAA ruling that allowed college athletes to profit from their names, images, and likeness. College HUNKS received national recognition when it signed an endorsement deal with University of Miami Quarterback D’Eriq King.
6. College HUNKS and the UCF Women’s Team finalized their deal over the holiday weekend shortly after the launch of the policy going into effect on July 6, 2021. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
7. The company, where women are known for leading the charge, has over 160 locations nationwide. As a purpose-driven organization, the Florida-based franchisor of moving and junk hauling recognized that women’s sports are often overlooked and deserve equal recognition and opportunity. Targeted because of its prominent franchise location, Central Florida is also home to the company’s 2020 HUNK of the Year, a Female HUNK team member.
8. According to Nick Friedman, co-founder of College HUNKS, “As a former college basketball player and father of three daughters, this is such an honor for our organization to be able to support these outstanding female athletes and teammates who work so hard at their craft. H.U.N.K.S. stands for Honest, Uniformed, Nice, Knowledgeable, Service, and we are committed to building and supporting leaders. Through our partnership with the UCF Women’s Basketball players, we hope we can help further their growth as they look to make a big run in the NCAA Tournament this year while also navigating school and life.”
Experiences Record Employee Retention
9. At the end of April 2022, College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving said that it had a stellar year with growth and sales in 2021 and experienced record employee retention and acquisition in its corporate headquarters. The College HUNKS team member count grew by 32% last year and included additions to its IT, marketing, and national accounts departments, all of which provide support for the brand’s franchise partners across North America.
10. Roman Cowan, brand president for College HUNKS, said, “The past couple of years have been challenging for many, but our teams were committed to surviving and thriving during the global pandemic. We have a deep understanding and appreciation that our employees are the backbone of our enterprise. We have a People First philosophy that puts our guests and team members at the forefront. College HUNKS believes that your company grows when you take care of your people.”
11. In recent years, College HUNKS updated its benefits structure to include increased bereavement time, upgraded paid maternity and parental leave, increased 401(k) employer match, and revamped PTO and company holiday programs. The company also offers work-from-home flexibility with a hybrid work model, competitive pay raises, and more.
12. College HUNKS also manages and operates their now completely remote Sales & Loyalty Center, which has benefited greatly from the brand’s commitment to team member satisfaction and empowerment, adding over 100 new agents in 2021 while experiencing record highs in retention and satisfaction.
13. The College HUNKS team member count has increased by 18% within the first quarter. The company also opened several new franchise locations across the country, with sites opening almost every month. In 2021, the company welcomed 50 new locations.
14. Kelsie Ackman, senior vice president of franchise development and legal affairs for College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving, added, “Across industries, many employees have expressed that flexible schedules and the ability to work from home are key deciding factors for choosing where they want to work, and we offer both. In addition to flexibility and our improved benefits, we also boast a rockstar culture that is supported by our core values. These elements combined make us an attractive option for prospective employees.”
Company History
15. College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving traces its history to 2003 when co-founder Omar Soliman wanted to make some extra money during summer break. Soliman’s mother owned a furniture store in Washington, D.C. and he noticed that customers would often ask if they could haul their old furniture away. After realizing that people were willing to have their old furniture taken away, Soliman recruited his best friend Nick Friedman. They jokingly called their service “College Hunks Hauling Junk,” but the name stuck. That summer, Soliman and Friedman earned over $8,000.
16. Following their successful summer, Soliman and Friedman returned to college. The University of Miami – where Soliman attended school – had just started the annual Rothschild Entrepreneurship Competition, which awarded a $10,000 prize to the best business plan. With help from Friedman, Soliman presented a winning business plan. Despite this initial success with their idea for College HUNKS Hauling Junk, Soliman and Friedman decided to pursue traditional careers after graduating from college.
17. However, they both felt that something was missing from their lives and decided to seriously pursue College HUNKS Hauling Junk. The first full-scale location was a success and Soliman and Friedman spent the next few years building the business. In 2008, they started franchising the College HUNKS Hauling Junk concept. After a few years, College HUNKS added moving services. Today, there are College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving locations across North America.
