Reaches 1,000 Locations
1. In mid-September 2021, Tropical Smoothie Cafe reached a major milestone with the opening – in Flower Mound, Texas – of its 1,000th location. At the time of the announcement, the company had signed agreements for an additional 249 future franchised locations, adding to an already extensive pipeline of future commitments.
2. Charles Watson, CEO of Tropical Smoothie Cafe, LLC, said, “I like to say we’re the biggest brand you’ve never heard of. 3. Franchisee DYNE Hospitality Group, which owns the new Flower Mound location, has 13 other Tropical Smoothie Cafes in Texas and 70 more across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, and Oklahoma. DYNE Hospitality Group opened its first two locations in 2011 and had plans to open 10-12 new cafes in 2021.
4. Appoints New Chief Operations Officer
5. In mid-September 2021, Tropical Smoothie Cafe promoted former Senior Vice President of Operations Richard Key to chief operations officer, effective immediately. Key has served on the brand’s senior leadership team since joining the company in 2018. In his new role, he will help grow and evolve field support teams and lead internal initiatives that prioritize the Tropical Smoothie Cafe guest experience and franchise profitability.
6. Names New Chief Marketing Officer
9. In mid-November 2021, Tropical Smoothie Cafe named Deborah von Kutzleben its new chief marketing officer. Von Kutzleben most recently served as vice president of brand strategy, advertising, and menu at Arby’s. Prior to that, she spent 22 years at BBDO Worldwide, where she was executive vice president and senior director for the global advertising powerhouse, leading campaign strategy and execution for many large national brands. At Tropical Smoothie Cafe, she will manage marketing strategy, menu innovation, and brand perception and growth while bringing the brand’s Inspire Better mission to life for guests, as well as franchisees and their team members.
10. 11. Von Kutzleben joins the company as it continues to post great numbers and breaks its own records. The brand recently celebrated its 1,000th-cafe milestone and is currently on a nine-year streak of same-store sales increases. Year to date, it has also exceeded its record-setting number of franchise agreements signed in a single year, with months to go.

Caps Off 10th Consecutive Year of Positive Same-Store Sales Growth
13. Tropical Smoothie Cafe marked its 10th consecutive year of positive same-store sales growth in 2021, along with additional milestones that included opening its 1,000th location, opening more new cafes than any prior year, and introducing its top-selling limited-time smoothie in company history.
14. In 2021, Tropical Smoothie Cafe reported that same-store sales were up 22% over 2020, with a two-year increase of 29.4% over 2019. Digital sales accounted for 76% of that growth, driven by the brand’s 2021 introduction of customizable online and mobile ordering that added another layer of convenience for guests.
15. The company also opened 133 new cafes in 2021, a company record. In addition to new openings, Tropical Smoothie Cafe signed the highest number of franchise agreements in its history, with 332 new agreements signed in 2021. More than 70% were signed with existing franchisees.
16. 17. 2021 goes into the books as a smash hit from a product innovation standpoint as well. In Q1, Tropical Smoothie Cafe launched its first shrimp limited-time offering (LTO) that quickly became the most popular food LTO in brand history. The Cajun Shrimp Wrap and the Cajun Shrimp Salad were back on the menu for a limited-time encore performance starting Jan. 19 this year. The brand also introduced two new LTO sides in 2021, Jalapeno Corn and Maple-Kissed Sweet Potatoes, which were so successful that they are now on the permanent menu.
18. Tropical Smoothie Cafe also crowned a new top-selling LTO smoothie of all time in 2021 when its all-new, cocktail-inspired Mango Berry Cosmo Smoothie topped the former bestseller and fan-favorite Watermelon Mojito Smoothie. The two are now the brand’s top sellers of all time, with 1 in 5 guest orders including at least one of them throughout the LTO’s availability.
Company History
19. Tropical Smoothie Cafe was founded in 1993 by Eric and Delora Jenrich and David Walker in Destin, Florida. The Jenriches and Walker often made their own smoothies from fresh fruits and vegetables. They began selling their smoothies, which were an immediate hit with customers. The Jenriches and Walker opened their first Tropical Smoothie Cafe location in 1997. Just a year later, Tropical Smoothie Cafe started franchising and the first franchised location opened in Tallahassee, Florida.
20. In 1999, Tropical Smoothie Cafe expanded its menu and began selling healthy food options such as sandwiches and wraps. Over the next few years, Tropical Smoothie Cafe continued to expand around the United States and by 2006, there were over 200 locations in operation. Also around that time, Tropical Smoothie Cafe standardized its décor across all locations.
21. In 2012, private equity firm Buckhead Investment Partners (BIP) bought a controlling interest in Tropical Smoothie Cafe. Less than a decade later, Tropical Smoothie Cafe was acquired by private equity firm Levine Leichtman Capital Partners (LLCP) in September 2020. Today, there are Tropical Smoothie Cafe locations all across the U.S.

- For purposes of the tables below, Net Revenue means all revenue related to the sale of products and performance of services at the Restaurant, whether cash or credit, and regardless of collection in the case of credit, and income of every kind or nature related to the Restaurant, less any discounts.
