According to John English, director of franchise development for Fish Window Cleaning, “Our franchisees are eager to provide these flexible jobs for people who are looking for a change in career or those who may have been laid off during the pandemic. Our industry offers the chance to work flexible hours, at your own pace and spend a lot of time outdoors in the sunshine.”
7. Becoming a FISH window cleaner does not require previous experience as training is provided. The job offers competitive wages and does not include work on nights, weekends, or holidays for most franchise locations.
8. English added, “These are great jobs for college students, working parents, or for people who are simply tired of working in an office. Local Franchisee Cleans Non-Profit’s Windows for Free
9. At the end of February 2021, Fish Window Cleaning of Peoria, Arizona cleaned every single window at the non-profit Gompers for free. Gompers provides services for people with disabilities including day training for adults, employment help, K-12 schooling, and more. A crew from Fish Window Cleaning showed up at their Blythe Campus near 75th Ave and Peoria to clean the windows.
10. Staff at Gompers are so grateful. Cheril Edson, the director of day training for adults at Gompers Blythe Center, said, “We want to say thank you very much. This is great. We are a non-profit agency. So having someone come out to do this? It’s amazing! So thank you.”
11. While many organizations haven’t been able to spend money on things like window cleaning and landscaping during the pandemic, for Gompers, it’s been even longer than that. “Been here four years; May 1 will be four years at this facility, and this is the first time I’ve seen out my windows! So I’m pretty excited about that,” Edson added.
Company History
12. Fish Window Cleaning was founded in 1978 by Mike Merrick in St. Louis, Missouri. Before moving into the window cleaning industry, Merrick worked as the branch manager of Farm and Home Savings and Loan. While working at Farm and Home Savings, Merrick met Mark Stobe, who cleaned the bank’s windows. Stobe told Merrick that he was going to sell his business, which at the time had 100 commercial accounts.
13. Merrick was intrigued and decided to look over Stobe’s books and was impressed by what he saw. However, Merrick was hesitant to jump head first into owning and operating his own business. Merrick ended up buying Stobe’s business after he was unexpectedly laid off from the bank. Merrick changed the business’s name to Fish Window Cleaning because of the Christian fish symbol and because of Merrick’s belief that God opened up this window of opportunity.
14. Merrick jumped headfirst into running the window cleaning business and initially he was the only cleaner. Demand for Merrick’s services grew and the business expanded. After 20 years, Merrick decided to start franchising Fish Window Cleaning in 1998. Today, there are Fish Window Cleaning locations across the United States.
