In this exclusive Q&A, we learn about Black Tie Moving, a luxury moving and relocation concept based in Nashville. Dustin Black, founder and CEO of Black Tie Moving, tells us about the concept and how it stands out among the competition.
Franchise Chatter (FC): For those unfamiliar, what is Black Tie Moving?
Dustin Black (DB): Black Tie Moving is a luxury relocation and moving services company that prides itself on creating the ultimate experience on moving day for consumers across America. Black Tie serves many of today’s biggest celebrities, athletes, musicians and CEOs on one of the most stressful days of their life, along with tens of thousands of homeowners who want to be treated like a star on moving day.
Our prices are comparable and competitive with other moving companies out there, but our service and professionalism ARE NOT! We only hire the best so that we can provide the best customer service and experience to our clients. Black Tie is one of the fastest-growing private companies in America, raking #391 on the INC500 list the last two years in a row.
At Black Tie, we don’t just move furniture, We MOVE PEOPLE!
FC: Tell us about your professional background. What led you to starting Black Tie Moving?
DB: My father owned his own moving company from the time I was about four years old. I grew up moving furniture on his trucks, developing the technical skill set that I needed at a young age with years of experience. After high school, I started working in property management, which eventually led to a successful career in the mortgage lending industry. In every position I’ve ever held, my customers were moving.
The mortgage industry tanked, and at the same time I had a terrible experience using a professional moving company. I couldn’t find a better moving service as a consumer, so I decided to create one based off what I believe people needed and deserved on one of the most stressful days of their life.
FC: What makes Black Tie Moving unique?
DB: Our people, our processes, our technology and the transparency we have with every customer. We have it all down to a science and truly take pride in delivering the red carpet moving experience for all of our customers, who are treated like VIPs on moving day.
There are never surprises at the end of the move. Our pricing is transparent and easy to understand. We have clean trucks and equipment, and we maintain high standards when hiring the movers who we put in our customers’ homes, through intensive interviews, background checks and drug testing.
FC: Why is Black Tie Moving relevant to today’s consumers?
DB: People move a lot these days and very few people want to do it themselves. Let’s face it, it’s hard and stressful! Black Tie serves as a trusted and reliable service provider in an industry where consumers have a difficult time finding either.
FC: Tell us about the high-profile connections that Black Tie Moving has, both as clients and business partners? How do these connections make Black Tie Moving stand out?
DB: We’ve had thousands of high-profile customers such as celebrities, professional athletes, musicians and CEOs over the last six years. In the last few months alone, we’ve moved people like Kane Brown, Mookie Betts, Larry Fitzgerald, Jessie James and Eric Decker, Demarco Murray, Carly Pierce and Michael Ray.
Our celebrity clients love our service and are likely to tell their massive fan base or following on social media. We’ve become the “go-to” movers for celebrities across America, thanks to the exposure that we’ve gained from creating great experiences for influencers like themselves.
Gary Levox, lead singer of the Rascal Flatts, loved our service so much two years ago that he and I decided to open three corporate locations together in his home state of Ohio. Luke Pell is another celebrity who has purchased a Black Tie franchise in Louisville, KY.
FC: Why did you decide to start franchising?
DB: I determined franchising was the right way to scale in the markets that were outside of our corporate footprint. Franchising allows us to partner with the right entrepreneurs who have the same core values, work ethic, and passion for serving people.
FC: Why is Black Tie Moving relevant for potential franchisees?
DB: Black Tie Moving is one of the fastest-growing moving companies in America and continues to rack up national business accolades and corporate partnerships in the real estate industry. We are revolutionizing the moving industry through our high level of professionalism, customer service, technology and transparency. Our digital marketing, SEO and social media marketing are next to none and we understand how to get in front of our target consumer.
FC: What kind of support does Black Tie Moving provide franchisees?
DB: My team and I have created a blueprint full of systems, processes, strategies and real estate partnerships nationwide that are easily duplicable and scalable. Black Tie Corporate provides high-level support, taking sales, customer service, compliance and lead generation off a franchisee’s plate, so they can focus their time on moving, as well as the customers, and not the business administrative tasks.
FC: Who is an ideal franchisee for Black Tie Moving?
DB: Black Tie Moving is perfect for any entrepreneurs that are passionate about helping people and coachable enough to follow our system.
FC: How many locations does Black Tie Moving currently operate?
DB: Black Tie Moving currently has 41 locations, both corporate and franchises.
FC: Tell us about the company’s expansion plans.
DB: We are looking to expand our corporate locations with several major celebrities in major markets over the next year and are also expecting to sell 100 franchises in 2019.
FC: What is the investment for potential franchisees?
DB: The franchise fee is $50,000 per territory. Each franchisee should expect to bring an additional $50,000 in working capital and $25,000 in start-up cost to the table.
