1. According to Rick Sage, vice president of marketing and brand strategy for Honest-1 Auto Care, his team tries to come up with seasonally appropriate messages throughout the year to promote the company’s shop owners and reach its core audience. However, Sage said that “the automotive industry and Valentine’s Day is often a tricky pairing.” He added, “Trying to somehow connect that to a vehicle is not an easy thing to do. In the past we had done showing love to your car, but this year we wanted to do something different.”
2. In 2018, Sage noticed that seven franchisees in the Honest-1 system were married couples. So, ahead of Valentine’s Day, Honest-1 Auto Care built a “Love in the Shop” campaign centering around married couples throughout its system and how they “maintain a marriage while maintaining vehicles.” Sage says it was just a simple way to promote Honest-1’s family-friendly shop atmosphere. “It’s more of just an awareness campaign,” Sage said. “The underlying theme is that the franchisees are just like you and your families.”
3. In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, Honest-1 promoted the stories of its married repair shop owners on Twitter and Facebook. One of the featured couples was Marie and Leighton C. of Honest-1 Auto Care in Orlando, Florida, who have used owning a franchise together as an opportunity to grow both as individuals and as a couple. According to the couple, “Making regular ‘we’ time keeps the relationship fresh and will also allow you to come back to the business rested with a new focus.”
4. After Valentine’s Day, Honest-1 continued to promote its married franchisees through the shops’ individual social media accounts, and boosted the posts locally.

5. While the automotive service industry has been a male-dominated industry in the past, Honest-1 Auto Care set out to change that and has presented itself as a family and female-friendly company. This has drawn several married couples and women to the company as franchise owners.
6. In early March 2018, Tiku and Smita Patel opened a new Honest-1 Auto Care franchise in Carrollton, Texas. With a background in hospitality, Smita was intrigued by the opportunity to own a franchise in the auto industry. Smita said, “As a female, I always dreaded when I had to take my car in for service. I felt like I was taken advantage of because I didn’t know the terminology, and just not an overall good experience.”
7. The Honest-1 Auto Care franchise intrigued Smita and her husband because it is very woman-friendly with an upscale lobby, complimentary refreshments, and even a kids’ play area. Creating a “female-friendly” environment was important to Smita and her husband. With a keen eye for setting out a welcoming atmosphere, Smita shared what you can expect as you walk in the door. “We take you back and show you exactly what’s wrong with your car. We don’t try to sell you anything you don’t need,” said Smita.
8. Smita added that Honest-1 Auto Care encourages franchise owners to hire female mechanics. She said, “Women can do the same job as their male counterparts, they have the same skills and training. We definitely promote that here to give them the opportunity to highlight those skills.” Additionally, Smita said that customers “think it’s really neat to see a female tech working on their car.”
