Surpasses Previous Year’s Donation to Toys for Tots

8.  At the beginning of 2018, Goddard School announced that it had surpassed its previous year’s donation to Toys for Tots by 50 toys. Two hundred and thirty toys, including 100 of last year’s winning Toy Test toy, Melissa & Doug Star Diner Restaurant Play Set, were donated to Toys for Tots last year to help Toys for Tots fulfill its mission of providing gifts to less-fortunate children during the holiday season. 10.  Committee members select educational toys that best support child-initiated play and collaboration, among other criteria, to pass to the next round of judging. Preschoolers from 50 Goddard School locations nationwide then play with the toys, and their teachers help them select the top 10 toys. The public then votes on the best toy from the 10 finalists to select a winner.

11.  Following the November 2017 announcement of the winning Toy Test toy, GSI purchased 100 Melissa & Doug Star Diner Restaurant Play Sets to donate to Toys for Tots. Every year, GSI purchases 100 of the winning Toy Test toy and donates the toys to the program, which is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

12.  Craig Bach, vice president of education for Goddard School, said, “Fun, interactive programs like our annual Goddard School Preschooler-Approved Toy Test are successful because they allow children to think critically while developing their social, creativity and collaboration skills. This experience provides children with the opportunity to engage with the top educational products on the market that are aligned with The Goddard School’s philosophy of learning through play.”

Company History

13.  Goddard School was founded in 1983 by Lois Goddard Haines in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Haines wanted to offer higher-quality childcare services and the original Goddard School incorporated a variety of teaching methods and progressive ideologies from all areas of child psychology and neurology to create a warm yet individualized experience to meet each child’s needs. The daily curriculum was supplemented with art, theater, music, garden to table, and made use of the traveling programs of The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Please Touch Museum, and The Franklin Institute.

14.  In 1988, Haines sold Goddard School to entrepreneur Anthony A. Martino, founder of the AAMCO Transmissions and MAACO Auto Painting and Bodyworks franchises. Martino established Carousel Systems, Inc. (named after the carousel horse that Haines had installed at the entrance of the original school) to start franchising the Goddard School concept. In 1996, Philip Schumacher became president of Carousel Systems and eventually CEO of the company.

15.  In 2002, Wind River Holdings, LP acquired the franchise assets of Carousel Systems, Inc. Wind River Holdings changed the name of the franchise company to Goddard Systems, Inc. As all of these changes took place, Goddard School continued to expand across the United States and by 2005, the company had opened its 200th school.

16.  At the beginning of 2010, Phil Schumacher’s brother, Joseph Schumacher, took over as CEO of Goddard Systems, Inc. and remains in the position today. A few years later, in 2013, Goddard School hit another milestone with the opening in Highland Heights, Ohio of its 400th school. Today, Goddard School has locations in over 37 states.

How do you have an occupancy ratio of over 100%? I would assume you would not be allowed to go over the limit? Thanks for another great review!

      Hi there,

Thank your for your comment. I appreciate the positive feedback.

I was thinking the same thing about the occupancy rate exceeding 100% for a significant number of franchisees. Goddard School does not provide any further detail other than what is stated in the review. I’m assuming that the occupancy limit is more like an internal maximum target, rather than a legal or physical limit. There is probably a bit of leeway for the franchisees to accept a few more students over and above their target maximum.

Hope this helps. Thanks for reading the review!

Is there a net worth requirement for Goddard? I emailed them but got no reply so far.

I checked Goddard School’s website; they don’t mention any minimum net worth requirement.

Entrepreneur.com cites a minimum net worth requirement of $750,000 to $2,000,000, which is a very wide range. I’m not sure where they got these numbers. Best to check with the franchisor, like you did.

      https://www.entrepreneur.com/franchises/goddardsystemsinc/282378

Franchisors don’t usually mention any minimum net worth requirement in their FDD, but they probably have a minimum net worth that they like to see, just to ensure that you have the financial ability to start the business or qualify for a loan.

Thank you for the great review !

I’m trying to figure out how to go from EBITDA to net income, at least roughly.
Any tips on how to estimate this from an EBITDA of this franchise ?
Would there be any amortization, depreciation ?
Besides the interest on the loan, any other expected interest ?

      Hi Arie,

Thank you for being a subscriber!

You are on the right track. To arrive at net income after taxes, simply deduct interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization from EBITDA (which is Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization). Interest refers to interest on loans. Amortization and Depreciation are non-cash accounting expenses, which have the effect of decreasing your net income for the purpose of calculating taxes. This allows you to deduct investments in fixed assets (real estate, equipment) over the life of those assets.

      Hope this helps.

      Best regards,

      Ambrosio

    Hi Ambrosio,

    Yes, it makes sense..
I’m looking to estimate rough numbers. In the article, you’ve listed rough EBITDA numbers, but what would be estimated/expected expenses for depreciation (school furniture ? school supplies ? what is typical for this type of franchise ?) Any amortization that is typical for this type of franchise ? (IP ? copyrights ?)
I’m not sure what to expect for depreciation and amortization because I don’t know what are relevant examples for this type of franchise ?
For interest on the loan to start the business, this is more straight-forward in terms of what can be expected, but if you have any info on typical interest rates given for franchising that would be helpful too.

Any clarification would be appreciated !
