Introduces Pre-Cooked, Quarter-Pound Steak Patties for Purchase at Retail Grocery Stores
7. At the end of August 2017, Nathan’s Famous expanded its grocery store offerings with the launch of Nathan’s Famous Pre-Cooked, Quarter-Pound Steak Patties. The brand’s pre-packaged hot dogs have been available at retail locations since the early 1980s. The burgers are made with fresh beef, with no fillers or artificial flavors. They are available in two varieties, Original and Cheddar Cheese, at select U.S. retailers including Kroger, Publix, and Super Target.
8. According to Nathan’s Famous, its steak patties are seared, slow cooked, and individually wrapped to lock in flavor and freshness. This pre-cooking process will allow customers to choose their level of doneness through microwaving of the patties for the specified amount of times in the instructions.
9. Mike Paribello, senior director of marketing for Smithfield Foods (the licensee of Nathan’s Famous pre-packaged hot dogs), said, “Nathan’s Famous Steak Patties give consumers exactly what they’re looking for – a fast, convenient way to enjoy a fresh burger in seconds, all without the hassles of the grill and regardless of the weather. We’re excited to bring a premium beef patty to the refrigerated aisle and show how pre-packaged, pre-cooked patties can be an easy and delicious meal solution for families across the country.”

10. Nathan’s Famous started out as a hot dog stand in Coney Island, New York in 1916; it was run by founder and company namesake Nathan Handwerker. He started the business with his wife Ida and used her hot dog recipe along with a secret spice mix created by Ida’s grandmother.
11. Prior to selling his own hot dogs, Handwerker worked at Feltman’s German Gardens, which was also on Coney Island, and sold hot dogs for 10 cents. Handwerker decided to undercut Feltman’s and only charged 5 cents for his hot dogs. The initial stand was an immediate success and for the next seven decades, the Handwerker family owned and operated Nathan’s Famous.
12. Nathan Handwerker’s son, Murray, expanded the business and opened a second location in 1955 and a third one a decade later. To meet the growing demand for Nathan’s Famous, a fourth location was opened in Times Square in the heart of New York City in 1971. A year later, Nathan’s Famous’ Fourth of July hot dog eating contest debuted at the original Coney Island location.
13. In 1987, the Handwerker family sold all of its Nathan’s Famous locations to a group of private investors, who started franchising the brand the following year. Today, there are over 260 Nathan’s Famous restaurants around the world and its branded hot dogs are sold at thousands of retail locations in all 50 states and internationally.
Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500
14. Nathan’s Famous has ranked on Entrepreneur’s annual Franchise 500 almost every year for the past 10 years, except in 2008, 2017, and 2018. The company’s highest rank was No. 128 in 2011, while its lowest rank was No. 493 in 2016.

- (5) restaurants located in amusement parks; and
- (6) limited menu restaurants, co-branded or otherwise, located within another concept (other than Branded Menu Program Operations and Nathan’s Famous Co-Branded Operations with Miami Subs restaurants) and seasonal restaurants.
- The sales numbers for franchised restaurants are based on sales reporting provided to the franchisor by its franchisees for the purposes of making royalty payments and marketing development fund contributions. The franchisor has not audited these figures and cannot verify their accuracy.
- The gross sales numbers in Part 1 are for the franchisor’s fiscal year ended March 26, 2017.
