If you are considering an Anytime Fitness franchise, don’t get blindsided by these 35 important franchise fees (from the initial franchise fee, to the royalty fee, to 33 other fees found in Items 5 and 6 of Anytime Fitness’s 2017 FDD).

1.  Standard Initial Franchise Fee:  $20,000 to $39,500

  • The franchisor offers franchises for Anytime Fitness and Anytime Fitness Express centers. The standard initial franchise fee for an Anytime Fitness center is $39,500. The standard initial franchise fee for an Anytime Fitness Express center is $20,000.
  • However, the franchisor does offer discounts for veterans, existing franchisees who are not in default under their existing Franchise Agreement(s), and for people signing an Area Development Agreement to operate multiple franchises.

2.  Development Fee:  the initial franchise fee for all the centers you commit to open

  • If you sign an Area Development Agreement, the initial franchise fee is referred to as a Development Fee, and you pay it in full, for all the centers you commit to open, when you sign the Development Agreement.

3.  Extension Fee:  $500

  • You will have 9 months from the date you sign the Franchise Agreement to open and begin operating your center. If you want to extend that time for an additional 3 months, and the franchisor agrees to allow you to do so, you must pay a $500 extension fee as a condition to the franchisor granting the extension.
  • After 12 months from the date you sign the Franchise Agreement, you must begin paying the monthly royalty fee (Monthly Fee) ($549 for an Anytime Fitness center and $449 for an Anytime Fitness Express center) to the franchisor, whether or not your Anytime Fitness center is open.
  • If you are actively working with FRE in locating a site or have signed a lease with the assistance of FRE, the franchisor will waive the Monthly Fee until your Anytime Fitness center is open.
  • After 18 months from the date you sign the Franchise Agreement, if you have not signed a lease for a location, the Franchise Agreement will be placed in default and if you do not open within the time provided for cure, the franchisor will terminate the Franchise Agreement.

4.  Compliance Drawing:  $250 for each additional Compliance Drawing after the first

  • The franchisor will create a specific club layout/design (“Compliance Drawing”) of your center using the as-built drawings, surveys, technical data, and site plans you provide. You must obtain a Compliance Drawing from the franchisor.
  • If you are developing a new Anytime Fitness center, the franchisor will provide you with one Compliance Drawing at no additional cost.
  • If you are signing the Franchise Agreement as part of a franchise renewal or transfer and the franchisor determines that your Anytime Fitness center requires renovation or re-equipment, then you must pay the franchisor $250 for your Compliance Drawing, but it will credit $250 against your Monthly Fee if you complete all renovation and re-equipment requirements by the required due date.
  • In either case, if you require additional Compliance Drawings, you must pay the franchisor $250 for each additional Compliance Drawing.

5.  Monthly Fee:  $549 per month for an Anytime Fitness center and $449 for an Anytime Fitness Express center

  • Due Date:  On or before the first day of each month.
  • You will begin paying this fee after you open your center, but if you have a Protected Territory and have not opened after one year, you then must begin paying this fee.
  • If you are working with FRE in locating a site or have signed a lease with the assistance of FRE, the franchisor will waive the Monthly Fee until your Anytime Fitness center is open.

6.  General Advertising Fee:  currently, $300 per month, beginning when you open your center

  • Due Date:  On or before the first day of each month.
  • For Anytime Fitness centers, the franchisor can increase the fee to the greater of $600 per month ($300 for Anytime Fitness Express centers) or 2% of your monthly revenues.

7.  Grand Opening Program:  minimum of $10,000 for an Anytime Fitness center; no minimum for an Anytime Fitness Express center

  • Due Date:  As incurred.
  • You must spend a minimum of $10,000 on a Grand Opening Program for your Anytime Fitness center beginning 60 days prior to your scheduled opening and ending 60 days following the opening of your Anytime Fitness center.
  • If you fail to spend the minimum required amount on the Grand Opening Program, the franchisor has the right to collect from you the difference between what you actually spent and the minimum required expenditure, and contribute such difference to the General Advertising and Marketing Fund.
  • You are not required to spend a minimum amount on a Grand Opening Program for an Anytime Fitness Express center.

8.  Anytime Health Membership Fees:  $0.50 per month per current member, subject to a maximum of $225 per month and $675 per month per franchisee for those with multiple centers

  • Due Date:  On or before the 15th day of each month.
  • You will be selling Anytime Health memberships to your members. You can determine the price for the membership, subject to a maximum of $5 per month for individuals, and $10 per month for couples and family memberships.
  • You keep all of the fees that you charge to your members, except the amounts you must pay to Anytime Health.

9.  Global Access Fee:  currently, $249 per month

  • Due Date:  On or before the first day of each month.
  • Once you begin operating, you pay this fee to the franchisor or its affiliate for ongoing support for its proprietary management and access control software, development and release updates of that software, email and website hosting, and support of your managed network.

  • Due Date:  On or before the 1st day of each month.

12.  Training Suite Registration Fee:  $500 for up to two individuals to attend the training program. Additional individuals may attend for an additional fee of $250 per person.

  • If you elect to use the Training Suite (as defined in Item 11) or the franchisor requires you to use the Training Suite in your Anytime Fitness center, you must complete the Training Suite Training Program.
  • In addition to the training fee, you are responsible for travel costs, room and board, and the salaries, fringe benefits, and other expenses you and your employees incur.

13.  Healthy Contributions Reimbursement Program – Initial Fees:  currently, no cost for set-up of the first Reimbursement Program, and $20 for each additional Reimbursement Program. Also, currently, $1.50 initial member fee for each member you enroll on the Healthy Contributions website, and $3 for each member enrolled by Healthy Contributions.

  • Due Date:  Paid by ACH or similar draft, generally 40-45 days after each month end.

16.  Inspection Fee:  generally $50 to $100

  • Due Date:  Your billing vendor will subtract this fee from the receipts generated by your accounts.
  • The franchisor reserves the right to have someone conduct an inspection of your center after you open. If you fail the inspection, the center will be re-inspected, and you may then have to reimburse the franchisor for its costs of additional inspections until the center passes an inspection.
  • As long as you pass the initial inspection, you will not incur this cost.

17.  Peer Compliance Committee Default Fee:  up to $1,000 per violation

  • Due Date:  Immediately after notice from the franchisor.
  • If you breach certain provisions of your Franchise Agreement, the franchisor can submit the default to a “Peer Compliance Committee” made up of other franchisees. If they determine a breach occurred, they may levy a fine against you of up to $500.
  • If you do not timely cure, or breach the provisions again, the next fine can be up to $1,000.
