Section I – Background Information

Two Brands Become One

Today, Green Leaf’s Beyond Great Salads and Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt are a co-branded concept owned by Villa Restaurant Group. However, the companies did not start out that way as Green Leaf’s was founded in 1976, while Bananas was founded in 1979 under the name Everything Yogurt.

Villa Restaurant Group acquired Everything Yogurt Brands in 2003. Soon after the acquisition, Villa Restaurant Group changed the brand’s name to Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt and combined the new brand with Green Leaf’s Beyond Great Salads. Since then, both brands have appeared together in co-branded locations.

Villa Restaurant Group is the parent company for a few other restaurant brands including Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen, Casa Java, and South Philly Steak and Fries. Today, Green Leaf’s and Bananas have over 40 locations throughout the United States.

Keeping Up With the Times

To stay relevant, Green Leaf’s and Bananas joined the social media platform Instagram in July 2016. The brand’s Instagram page, @greenleafsbananas, features new and favorite menu items, guests’ photos, and limited-time promotions and offers.

Limited-Time Offers

Green Leaf’s and Bananas try to keep their menus fresh by often offering limited-run menu items. Green Leaf’s current limited-time offer is three new Artisan Melts. The Artisan Melts were launched in late January 2017 and the new flavors are Kickin’ Chicken Flatbread – pepper jack, provolone, all-natural smoked chicken, basil, cilantro, and Frank’s Honey Garlic Sauce; Mariachi Melt – pepper jack, cheddar, all-natural smoked chicken, pico de gallo, and Tajin mayo; and Spinach Dip Panini – mozzarella, provolone, baby spinach artichoke hearts, and spinach dip.

On November 9, 2016, Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt launched an “Orange You Glad It’s Over?” smoothie to celebrate the end of the 2016 presidential election. The smoothie, a 16-ounce blend of nonfat vanilla frozen yogurt, ice, mandarin oranges and carrots, was sold at participating locations for 45 cents to celebrate the 45th president of the United States.

Andrea Carella, Brand Manager of Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt and Villa Restaurant Group said, “Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt created the ‘Orange You Glad It’s Over?’ Smoothie as our way of showing our appreciation to all those that voted and patiently awaited the outcome of this election and participated in the democratic process.”

To help everyone get through tax day 2016, Bananas released a special drink called “the CPA.” The drink, a 16-ounce frostie featuring fresh strawberries and bananas, with added Red Bull Yellow Edition, was available at participating locations on April 17 and 18. In order to show appreciation for Certified Public Accountants, Bananas offered the drink for free to anyone who presented a valid CPA license.

Never Ranked on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500

Despite being in business for decades, both Green Leaf’s Beyond Great Salads and Bananas Smoothies & Frozen Yogurt have remained small brands. Even with the co-branded effort, there are still just under 50 locations. Due to the modest growth of both companies, neither Green Leaf’s nor Bananas has appeared on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list, at least in the past decade.
