Section I – Background Information
Decades in Business
Glass Doctor started out as a single location in Seattle, Washington in 1962. Over a decade later, in 1977, the company started franchising. In 1998, the Dwyer Group Inc., an international franchisor of service industry companies, acquired Glass Doctor. That same year, the Dwyer Group moved Glass Doctor’s headquarters to Waco, Texas. Other franchises under the Dwyer Group umbrella are Mr. Rooter Plumbing, Mr. Appliance, ProTect Painters, and Molly Maid.
Today, Glass Doctor has more than 270 locations in the U.S. and Canada. It is the largest full service glass company in the nation. It specializes in auto windshield replacement and repair, and residential and commercial glass doors and windows.
Ranked as a Top Franchise Opportunity
Glass Doctor ranks consistently as a top franchise opportunity on different lists. In 2015, the company landed the No. 93 spot on Franchise Gator’s Top 100 Franchise Opportunities list. The annual list was created by Franchise Gator as a way to help people interested in franchising, while limiting potential risks.
According to Eric Bell, the General Manager of Franchise Gator, to make the list, a franchise must have been successful in building a solid customer base and gaining the trust of investors. The formula Franchise Gator uses to determine rank focuses on financial stability, growth, transparency, engagement, continuity, and sustainability.
Also in 2015, all eight of the Dwyer Group’s companies earned a spot on the Top 100 Franchises for 2015 list by the World Franchising Network. The list takes into account many factors including historical performance, franchisee satisfaction, training, and financial stability.
The Dwyer Group companies to make the list are Aire Serv, Glass Doctor, Mr. Appliance, Mr. Electric, The Grounds Guys, Mr. Rooter, Rainbow International, and Five Star Painting. Glass Doctor also made the annual list in 2014.
Added a Second Vice President to Aid Company Growth
In late 2014, Mike Gai joined the Glass Doctor corporate staff as vice-president. The company says the company’s growth over the past few years demanded the hiring of a second vice-president. According to president Mark Liston, they need two VPs, “one that would focus on our franchisees’ current operational needs, which I call ‘blocking and tackling,’ and one to guide us to a variety of future opportunities.”
Gai was a successful Glass Doctor franchisee in Seattle before moving to Waco in 2010 to join the corporate team, specifically heading up the national sales effort. Brad Voreis, VP of Operations, will continue in his VP roles but will focus on future opportunities for Glass Doctor.
Glass Doctor Values Its Franchisees
Every year at the Dwyer Group’s international convention, Glass Doctor awards its Franchisee of the Year. For 2016, the award went to Larry and Cheryl Patterson, owners of Glass Doctor North Texas. This is the highest award that Glass Doctor gives to its franchisees. To win the award, a franchisee must show consistent growth through proper training and management of the organization, consistent high sales volume, and quality customer service.
The Sioux Falls Glass Doctor location won the award in 2015 and 2014; this was the first time a franchisee won for two consecutive years. The owners of the Sioux Falls Glass Doctor are Justin and Jennifer Eimers.
Not only does Glass Doctor reward hard work by its franchisees, it provides them with a lot of support and on-going training. Every year at the Dwyer Group convention, franchisees have the opportunity to undergo more training.
When franchisees first start out, they have a Sure Start Consultant who will guide them through their opening. As they continue with the company, they have access to a dedicated Franchise Consultant.
Franchisees also get preferred vendor discounts through the Dwyer Group’s access to ProTradeNet. In addition to the Dwyer Group’s annual convention, Glass Doctor has many regional and national conferences where franchisees have the opportunity to seek new training and support.
Highs and Lows on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 List
Although Glass Doctor continues to maintain a spot on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list, it has been all over the rankings. Its highest spot was at No. 163 in 2012. The following year, the company saw a steep drop down to No. 397. Glass Doctor’s lowest spot on the list was in 2014 at No. 459. For Entrepreneur’s 2016 list, Glass Doctor ranked at No. 441.
