There are a lot of misconceptions about what it takes to be successful in the world of business and franchise ownership. Misconceptions that can cost you your time, money, and even your sanity if you don’t quickly realize them for the fallacies they are.
In an effort to help you distinguish between what is reality and what is fiction when it comes to owning your own business, here are four truths that every successful business owner knows so that you enter this process with your eyes wide open:
Truth #1 – It is Normal (And Even Okay) to Question Your Actions
Read some successful business owners’ biographies and you are led to believe that they knew exactly what steps to take and exactly when to take them. Follow this way of thinking and you may take every little uncertainty that you have as a sign that you won’t succeed, causing you a lot of stress and maybe even getting you to give up on your dreams.
However, this is rarely the case. In fact, a majority of successful business owners know that if you don’t question yourself and your actions every now and again, then you are likely to make a critical mistake that may ultimately cost you everything that you’ve worked for.
All in all, it’s okay to be a little unsure about your actions as that will force you to think things through. Don’t let the fear of taking the wrong actions stop you from going after your dreams and making them come true.
Truth #2 – Success is Created Internally, Not Externally
The news is rampant with stories of how the economy is hurting businesses and how various events are impacting the growth of small businesses and franchises all over the world. But the reality is that there are still companies that are profiting during these turbulent times, so you can’t and shouldn’t always blame your lack of success on external sources.
If you’re up against hurdles in regard to growing your business, then find ways around them. For instance, if your clients are facing economic pressures, work to come up with solutions that are a win/win. Maybe you could institute payment plans or offer deals they simply cannot refuse in an attempt to bring in money even when the economy is weak. Be creative and work toward a solution instead of throwing your hands in the air and declaring your business a loss.
Truth #3 – It Takes Years to Become an Overnight Success
Although a lot of businesses seem to step into the spotlight quickly and with ease, things aren’t always as they seem. If you take the time to learn about the challenges and perils that they’ve faced along the way, it is then that you realize that they’d been working toward success for many years, if not decades. It was their perseverance that got them to where they are today, even though it was seemingly in the blink of an eye.
Remember this when you feel as if your business or franchise isn’t growing or changing as quickly as you like. Good things take time. Consider your hard work and effort the grapes that will result in a fine wine that you can sip at the end of it all, basking in the glorious business you’ve created.
Truth #4 – There Are No Successful Shortcuts, Only Successful Processes
Check your email inbox and someone or something will be in there, trying to sell you a shortcut to your success. They promise that if you simply follow the exact same steps they took, then all you have to do is sit back and prepare to receive millions in your bank account. If only it was that easy.
Certainly, it does help to follow a process that nets results, which is the basis of franchising, but that doesn’t mean that you’re going to achieve success without putting in the necessary time and effort up front. Plan to work long days and miss important family functions, at least at first, because there is going to be no way around it if you want to be successful in your business and make sure it gets off the ground the right way.
